Carol Korpela

I am excited to begin my second year at Capitol West Academy, teaching first and second grade. My education includes a bachelor’s degree in education from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and a master’s degree in education from Carroll College. In addition, I earned an additional 33 graduate-level credits in education from various institutions.

I have extensive teaching experience. I taught for the Milwaukee Public Schools for 34 years, first at 27th Street School and then at Lee Elementary. I tried retirement, but found out that it’s not for me, so the year before last I went back to teaching for the school districts of  Waukesha, Muskego-Norway and Kettle Moraine.  For the past two summers I taught reading to first and second graders in the Kettle Moraine School District. And now, of course, I am privileged to again be teaching at Capitol West Academy.

My goal is to give my students a strong foundation for their future educational endeavors.  By working together with many great parents last year we were able to do just that.

Classroom news

We are now more than halfway through this school year.  The students recently completed their winter MAPS tests, and you should have received the results.  I’m happy to report that a large majority of students in our class scored above grade level expectancy in both reading and math.  For first graders, a score of 170.1 in reading is considered average, and a score of 172.2 in math is considered average.  For second graders, a score of 183.4 in reading is considered average, and a score of 185.9 is considered average.  The test will be given one more time this school year, in May.  Please take this time to congratulate your child on his/her progress, and continue to encourage him/her to improve even more by May.

We are continuing to learn and practice good character development daily.  As of the end of February, 15 students in our class have Green Passports, demonstrating that they have internalized the core values or Respect, Responsibility, Honesty and Achievement.  They are “Living Above the Line.”
