This is my third school year at Capitol West Academy teaching art and technology. In my art classes, I emphasize the elements of art through different activities and materials, while studying artists and their different styles. Some units will just be working on a process with no product, but your child will explore many different kindsof art. In technology, we will practice basic computer skills, learn to type, use the Internet for research, and learn to use the Microsoft Office applications to create reports, type papers and make presentations.
I believe we all teach children through our subjects to be better human beings; art and technology happen to be my facilitators. I believe in creating an environment of freedom with manageable limits and responsibilities that will help your child become the best he/she can be.
Our rules in class revolve around respect. I expect all students to be respectful of others and responsible with materials. We expect all students to show respect for themselves by coming to class prepared, displaying a positive attitude, exhibiting good work habits, and completing all assigned work. I am committed to showing your child the same respect.
I believe that parents and families are as essential to the education of our students as we teachers. With that in mind, I would like to invite you to visit the art room or computer lab and observe the learning process any time. If you have a special talent, I invite you to share it with your son’s or daughter’s class. I would welcome a guest in my class anytime, or a volunteer who wants to get his or her hands dirty.
I hope you will ask to see your child’s artwork and have him or her tell you about how it was made and about the ideas behind it. It is also a wonderful reward for children if you display some of their artwork as well. The value you place on their ideas and accomplishments in art is very helpful in building the confidence they need to continue to develop their risk-taking, decision-making and creativity.
Classroom news
If you have any sources of reusable items such as containers with lids (big and small), cardboard, small pieces of scrap wood, different types of paper, beads, leather, etc., I’ll take it. We can always use extra supplies and “stuff” to make things with.
Thank you for the privilege of working with your child.
