Kendra Thiel

Kendra ThielThis is my third year at Capitol West Academy, and I am happy to have moved into the second grade with most of my first-grade students from last year. We have an exciting year of learning ahead. At CWA, I have taught summer school, am part of the character education committee, and have worked hard on the curriculum for first and second grades, to ensure that your child is receiving a challenging and rigorous education.

I have a bachelor’s degree in elementary education and mathematics for elementary education from Marquette University. Currently I am working on my master’s degree in Educational Policy and Leadership, also at Marquette.

Classroom news

It’s great to be back in second grade! The first few weeks of school are  full of routines and procedures. This month we will begin an author study on Kevin Henkes. We will explore his books as we learn reading strategies and the writing process. Later this month, we will also begin our Dinosaur Unit in Science as we discover changes in time on our planet.

Second Grade Homework

Each night, second grade students are expected to read for at least 20 minutes and record their books in their reading log. Students will also receive nightly math homework, to review the math topic we worked on in class that day. Additionally, students will have a spelling test each Thursday. The spelling list will go home on the Friday before the test along with a homework packet that will be due on the day of the test.

Periodically, your child will have assignments that go along with our unit of study in science or social studies. Prior to a test in these subjects, a study guide will be sent home for your child to review with you in order to help them prepare.

Thank you for your support with nightly homework. Together we can ensure your child succeeds.
